How AI Is Transforming Caregiving — And What It Means for Families

Updated on: May 23rd, 2025 • Resource: Adult Foster Care, Elderly Home Care, Lifestyle

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept — it’s becoming a daily tool in healthcare, including caregiving. “Artificial intelligence is transforming caregiving by automating tasks and providing actionable insights. While still an emerging field, AI-driven tools are proving invaluable for caregivers,” explains the AARP.

But what does that mean for families who care for elderly or disabled loved ones?

“‘I believe the quality of AI-driven digital support we’re going to see soon will provide a significant answer to the caregiving crisis,’” says Rick Robinson, vice president and general manager of the AgeTech Collaborative from AARP. Below are five uses for this emerging technology.

1. Smarter Health Monitoring at Home

AI-enabled devices like smartwatches and home sensors can now track heart rate, sleep patterns, and medication adherence — alerting caregivers and providers in real time. “Sensors also can detect changes in moisture, sounds and temperature and tie into an internet-connected smart home that caregivers not present 24-7 can access,” explains the AARP. And the technology needn’t feel invasive. “Many ambient sensors and devices are meant to blend into a home rather than feel like an invasion of a person’s space.” For example, sensors tied to a smart fridge can track seniors’ eating habits.

2. Predictive Care Helps Prevent Emergencies

Through predictive analytics, AI can analyze patterns to predict health risks like falls or hospital readmissions, enabling early interventions that save lives and reduce costs. “This is achieved through facilitating coordinated care and analyzing data from various facets of a patient’s life and care, taking into account their frailty,” explains the National Institutes of Health(NIH).

“By analyzing historical data, AI can predict future healthcare needs and identify potential gaps in care delivery,” notes Behavioral Health News. “This enables home care providers to proactively address these gaps, ensuring that resources are allocated where they are needed most.”

3. Virtual Assistants Reduce Caregiver Stress & Increase Independence

Voice-activated assistants like Alexa or Google Home can remind members to take medications, attend appointments, or call for help — freeing caregivers for other tasks. As noted in the Journal Nature, “[e]merging technologies like conversational AI are presenting exciting possibilities for supporting caregivers, both professional and unprofessional.” These chatbots can help caregivers make important decisions about care in real-time. “AI can readily access and share vast amounts of information about diseases, offering caregivers real-time guidance on symptom management, treatment options, and relevant caregiving strategies.” The goal is to make life easier for caregivers and those they care for. “These intelligent virtual assistants offer a range of helpful functions, alleviating burdens and improving the overall care experience.”

AI intelligence combined with robotics has the potential to increase independence for those who need care at home. “Various AI solutions, including an array of support robots have been developed to address the need for assistance in care,” explains the NIH. “AI-enabled devices have the potential to significantly enhance the independence of older adults in managing their health. This technological support not only promotes autonomy and self-reliance among the elderly but also helps in reducing the burden on caregivers.”

4. Virtual Communities Increase Connections and Wellbeing

By connecting disparate individuals in home care with the same needs or experiences, AI can create community and prevent isolation. “AI can identify commonalities among patients that might not be immediately apparent to under-resourced healthcare workers. This allows for creating virtual support groups and communities where patients can share experiences, offer mutual support, and receive targeted interventions,” explains Behavioral Health News. “These virtual communities can transform home care by providing a platform for continuous engagement and support.”

Experts in technology at the AARP predict that these capabilities will be used to coordinate care among family members and more. AI caregiving could become the “‘fabric for a new social network,’ not something like Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, but rather one that brings families together privately for the sole purpose of providing care.”

5. AI Supports Professional Teams Too

“Of course, not everyone has a trusted circle of relatives or community of friends who can help,” they note. “That’s when a primary caregiver would need to summon outside care coordinators and clinicians.” At Mass Care Link, we use secure platforms to streamline documentation, care plans and assessments—ensuring timely, accurate services for our members and caregivers.

Of course, technology can’t replace compassion. AI is a powerful tool, but it’s not a substitute for human touch. Our caregivers and staff provide the empathy and presence that machines can’t.
