Who Can Be a PCA for a Family Member in Massachusetts?

Updated on: July 22nd, 2022

Family members may be able to work as a Personal Care Attendant (PCA) for an eligible MassHealth member in Massachusetts, subject to PCA program requirements.

The PCA program is consumer-directed, meaning the MassHealth member receiving services, or their designated representative when applicable, is responsible for directing the PCA’s work.

Eligible PCAs may include certain adult family members, such as adult children, siblings, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or other qualified individuals.

The rules for who may serve as a PCA are different from the rules for Adult Foster Care, so families should review the requirements of the specific program they are considering.
