Can a parent be a caregiver to their minor child?

Updated on: January 7th, 2026

Under Mass Care Link’s program, you may be the caregiver for your sons if they are 18 or older. Parents of minors are considered the natural guardians of their children, and under MassHealth regulations and federal rules, legal guardians cannot serve as paid caregivers.

However, if your children are minors and at least one is 16 or older, another adult who lives in the home and is not the parent or legal guardian may qualify to receive a monthly payment for providing the care.

If your sons meet the age and eligibility requirements, you may be able to provide care for them. Please give our intake team a call at 866-880-8889, extension 710, and we can review your situation and guide you through the next steps.
